Whiz Kid Club for Boys & Girls

You have an creative, energetic kid, but when it comes to getting along with friends, family or even teachers, he seems to be clueless. The craving to be liked and accepted is so strong, but she doesn’t seem to know how to connect,  so she ends up alone or worse in fights. He may act goofy to try to make others laugh not realizing that his behavior is not making him friends and may even be annoying. She may be too honest and cause hurt feelings without understanding what she did wrong. He might get along well with adults, but has a hard time connecting with peers.

You have tried putting her into sports or maybe scouts with disastrous results. He is not successful unless you are there supervising every minute. You set up play dates or other activities, but she is still struggling to make or keep friends. You worry how all this rejection is affecting his self esteem.

You need a program for your child that provides:

  • A social skills assessment that pinpoints what needs work
  • Specific social skills lessons that address those needs
  • A program so fun that he won’t even know that he’s learning!

Introducing Whiz Kid Club for Boys & Girls!

Whiz Kid Club is a weekly social skills program that helps kids struggling with social skills deficits to be successful. This 9 week program is designed to help your child:

  • Understand how one’s behavior affects others
  • Learn strategies to avoid melt downs
  • Think more flexibly
  • Master techniques to manage anxiety, anger and other strong feelings
  • Read non-verbal cues and eventually be able to understand them
  • Follow hidden social rules
  • Control impulsive behavior that causes trouble

Whiz Kids is the best thing I did this whole week!

Each child will be given a social skills assessment which will help us to customize the program to fit the needs of the particular children in each group. There will be a maximum of 6 children in each group with a 3 to 1 ratio of children to adults. There will be plenty of opportunities for learning, lots of supervision, and positive attention that insures your child’s success.

Our leaders have been trained extensively in behavior modification techniques using the Nurtured Heart Approach as well as Collaborative Problem Solving. This powerful combination of well researched techniques creates an environment where children who normally struggle will thrive. Our staff is trained in CPR, First Aide, and Food Handling so you won’t need to worry about safety. We will serve snacks at each group and will have an incentive program with fun prizes to reward participation and good behavior during the session. We will be utilizing the Super flex and Think Social! lessons developed by Michelle Garcia Winner.

WhizKid Club is comfortable

The club takes place on the second floor of a residential home. This room is set up specifically to look like a club house with comfy couches, chairs, and cushions so that your child will be comfortable and at home. We have an art area, a quiet area, a class room space, and of course we will be going outside (or in the garage) for games every session.

Each session will be filled with fun activities that build skills:

  • Writing, directing and acting in a movie
  • Games inside and outside (or in the garage depending on weather)
  • Music
  • Art
  • Science experiments
  • Building projects (Legos, marble works and many non-traditional materials.)

We will be having a special party on the last day of the session to celebrate all our successes as well as a special viewing of the kid produced video that we will be creating. This is a special time for your child to share with you all that he  has learned over the last nine weeks.

Karen is the author of the parenting book, “Better Behavior Without Stress” which is available on Amazon.com as well as on this website in digital formats.

Kristin Hanson

Kristin has been working with children with disabilities for the last 15 years. Kristin has completed group and basic counseling classes as well as special training on Social Thinking by Michelle Garcia Winner and the  Hand Writing with Out Tears curriculum.
Kristin Hanson
Kristin has four children and the oldest has been diagnosed with ADHD combination type, depression, anxiety, sensory challenges, mild speech disorder, and last year Asperger’s Syndrome. Because of all the challenges to raise her intense child, Kristin joined the local CHADD chapter (Children and Adults with ADHD) and eventually became the coordinator.

New Kids

Every child entering our program will have a social skills assessment. This is an interactive assessment with Karen DeBolt which will help you to understand your child’s challenges and help us to design a program that will address those challenges.

Assessments can be scheduled anytime before the sessions begin. The assessment appointment will last for about one hour.

Children new to our programs will attend two special sessions to bring them up to speed with members who have been in Kids Club or Whiz Kid Camp before. We will teach the expectations of the program and also the common social skills vocabulary that we use in our program.

“Whiz Kid Club has really helped my son in so many ways. He is able to actually catch himself before he does something annoying or at least identify that he’s doing it before I say a word. The best thing about it is how much he enjoys it. He loves the games, enjoys proudly showing off the movie that he made, and best of all he has friends.”
