Better Behavior Without Stress Book
When Chaos at home is wearing you out
You feel overwhelmed by the problems going on in your family. The arguing and fighting is completely exhausting you. You feel like all you do is nag about picking up toys, doing homework, or getting ready for bed. You worry that your relationship with your children and even with your partner is starting to unravel under the constant strain. Worst of all, you are starting to doubt your own abilities as a parent.
You want to have a happy, peaceful home, but nothing you do seems to make lasting changes. You’ve read parenting books, you’ve talked to your pediatrician, and you’ve talked to friends and family, yet no one seems to really understand your child’s specific challenges. The techniques that work for a typical child just don’t work for your intense child.
There is help
You need a book written by someone who has been there, and understands what it takes to turn things around and begin to enjoy parenting again. A book that provides:
- Clear explanations about why your child is behaving like this
- Practical techniques that you can implement immediately
- Proven strategies for common problems
- Support for you in making this difficult journey
Here’s my story
My son was kicked out of the health club babysitting area when he was 18 months old for hitting other babies. I thought—it’s a boy thing, he’ll out grow it. The terrible twos became the horrible threes which lead to the frantic fours. By now, I was used to my son’s aggressive outbursts, trouble sleeping, and difficulty transitioning from one activity to another. It seemed like the only word he knew was “NO!” It was exhausting, and I was convinced that I was a horrible mother. I actually felt relieved to take him to preschool to get a small reprieve. When our preschool teacher, who had known our family for six years, finally threw up her hands in defeat, I knew that I had to take action. This marked the beginning of our journey.
I saw a psychologist, read a bunch of books and websites on parenting, ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. I began to try to apply the Behavior Modification techniques that everyone talked about. I was still struggling with understanding how this worked, and why my son was behaving in this way. I was also terrified that he was going to turn into a psychopath or something. I used to say “If only he would use his powers for good and not evil!” He was so smart and funny, but also struggled so much!
Overtime, I realized that my son was actually on the Autism Spectrum, and when I modified the behavior modification techniques with techniques that work well with kids on the spectrum, I discovered two things.
It works really well!
and
It works well with kids who are not on the spectrum as well.
As I began to work with other struggling parents of children with various diagnoses like: ADHD, ADD, NVLD, Asperger’s Syndrome, ASD, PDD NOS, depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders and no diagnosis at all, I realized that these same parenting techniques worked well with all of them. No only that, I realized that by empowering parents the therapy would continue everyday–not just when the child is in my counseling office!
You as your child’s therapist
You didn’t cause the problems, but you can be a big part of the solution.
After all, you are with your child everyday during those crucial learning moments. By arming yourself with effective parenting tools, you can make a huge difference for your whole family.
Most professionals have to take continuing education classes to keep up with the latest information and research. Yet good parenting is supposed to be something we are born with and know how to do perfectly without instruction or support. It’s a crazy idea that seems to be built into our culture. It is just not true. You can get the support and help that you need to be the best parent that you can be through all the stages of your intense child’s development.
