Your child is a total whiz in some areas. Maybe he’s a whiz in math, reading, science, or video games–maybe more than one kind. When it comes to social situations though, he is clueless. He struggles to keep friendships, alienates classmates, and embarrasses family members on a regular basis. You want to help him, but it’s hard to know what to do when he doesn’t seem to get what other people understand without even trying.

It might be that he’s too honest causing hurt feelings. He might be unable to see another point of view, so he always wants to be first or mistakenly thinks accidental bumps were on purpose. He may just get easily overwhelmed by transitions, so his favorite word is “NO!” These are signs of a social skills learning delay or disability.

He may have a diagnosis like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Non-Verbal Learning Disorder (NVLD),  Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),  Asperger’s Syndrome (AS), Pervasive Developmental Disorder NOS (PDD NOS), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), or no diagnosis at all.

It’s painful as a parent to watch your child struggle with things that just seem to come naturally to others. You get embarrassed by his behavior in public and worry that he will never really fit in with peers. You worry that his schooling will be put in jeopardy even though he is quite smart academically.

There is hope. You child can learn bit by bit to:

  • read social cues
  • understand other people’s perspectives
  • be a more flexible thinker
  • and start feeling good about themselves
